Chinese Cosmopolitan City

Exhibition Runs: Monday, January 21 – Friday March 1
Gallery Talk: Friday, January 25, 5pm

Location: Elmaleh Gallery, Campbell Hall

After three decades of rapid development, Chinese urbanization seems to have entered into a new phase, which is characterized by cosmopolitanism. While earlier examples of world cities in Asia such as Hong Kong and Singapore are illuminating, Chinese cities offer unique experiences as they engage with this profound transformation from social and cultural conditions not foregrounded in colonialism. The 2018 China Program investigated this new stage of Chinese urbanization, particularly in the context of increasing infrastructural integration of the world ambitiously planned by China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The 2018 China Program focused on influential factors of urban change: the flows of labor, goods, and innovations which resulted in Chinese cities adapting its spaces to new realities. We examined the instruments and institutions of the world system, and studied the spatial modifications in the Chinese city that anticipate a new era of urbanization not marked by quantitative increase but by a cultural change. These are presented as documentations of urban change, analyses of architectural developments, and understandings of cultural encounters in the context of global trade.

UVA Architecture China Program would like to thank the Weedon Foundation for their continued support for better understandings between cultures and architectural traditions.

Drama

The Wolves Publicity Photos by Martyn Kyle of Pernmoot Photography

From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, a girls indoor soccer team prepares for a succession of games while navigating their personal lives with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, The Wolves is smart, snappy, crude and honest. “I wanted to see a portrait of teenage girls as human beings,” says playwright Sarah DeLappe, “As complicated, nuanced, very idiosyncratic people who weren’t just girlfriends or sex objects or manic pixie dream girls but who were athletes and daughters and students and scholars and people who were trying actively to figure out who they were in this changing world around them.”
