Primates and Friends is a group exhibition featuring our closest evolutionary self, the monkey, by artists from New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Spanning painting, printmaking, sculpture and video, the diverse body of works on display will speak to our homo-sapien legacy with the primates. The exhibition is timed perfectly with the Chinese New Year on February 8, as 2016 will herald in the Year of the Monkey. It’s the Year of the Red Monkey, in fact, who is smart, naughty and wily. All these traits seem to be evident from the various depictions delineated by these artists, with the exception of those monkeys who anthropomorphize into humans, as in Charles Yuen’s “Monkey to Human” series of paintings. In this case, the monkey gets the raw end of the deal, losing his “smarts” to the dumbness of humanity.

In conjunction with the exhibition, artist Charles Yuen will give a lecture on the development and process of his work on January 28 at 6:00 in Campbell Hall. His lecture, as well as the exhibition’s opening reception on Final Friday, January 29 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm are free and open to the public.
