Four Arts & Sciences faculty members are among the six new Mellon Arts Fellows selected by the Mellon Indigenous Arts Initiative.

The 2018-19 Mellon Arts Fellows include Allison Bigelow(Spanish), Federico Cuatlacuatl (Art), James Igoe(Anthropology) and Noel Lobley (Music). Phoebe Crisman(Architecture) and Karenne Wood (Virginia Foundation for the Humanities) also were awarded fellowships.

The Mellon Indigenous Arts Initiative is funded in partnership by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the Provost’s Office. The initiative seeks to establish UVA as a research center of excellence for the study of the Indigenous arts and aims to bring together object-oriented research and teaching and open new opportunities for training in curatorial work for students from a broad spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds.

The Arts Fellows will be partially released from teaching and will be expected to develop a course based on the research they conduct during their fellowship. In addition to one course release, each Fellow will receive research funds in the amount of $10,000 ($6,500 to support their individual research and creative work and $3,500 for course development).
