The LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph features artist talks and exhibitions by legendary photographers, as well as outdoor projections, free community events, and educational initiatives. Everything takes place along Charlottesville’s historic pedestrian corridor known as the “Downtown Mall”, and at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. LOOK3’s world-class exhibitions are free and open to the public, as is the Friday Evening Projections and many special events.

THE PDN EMERGING 30 PANEL: STRATEGIES FOR EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographers recently selected for “PDN’s 30 2016: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch” will share the most valuable lessons learned as they were launching their careers, and explain how they got their work noticed and supported.  Moderated by Holly Hughes, Editor, PDN Magazine.

EDU SEMINAR DAY: CREATIVITY MEETS TECHNOLOGY

This one-day seminar is created to provide a survey of contemporary technology, social media, publishing, sharing and delivery platforms that are essential tools for artists to create, collaborate produce and share their work. Topics include balancing content/audience, generating media opportunities, atypical publishing platforms, impacting change through social media, and measuring audience engagement today.

TREES TALK: FRANS LANTING

National Geographic photographer Frans Lanting has a gift for connecting us with the lives of animals and showing us the world through their eyes. Lanting’s mission is to use photography to help create leverage for conservation efforts ranging from local initiatives to global campaigns. See Frans Lanting’s stunning natural history photographs hanging from the TREES on Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall and then hear him talk about his life and work.

EDU SEMINAR DAY: ARTISTS MEET YOUR MARKETS

This half-day seminar + afternoon LOOK3 Pitch offers photographers a window to appreciative audiences in such markets as fine art, editorial, advertising, licensing rights and more.  Observe a live “pitch” of these clients intended to make a strong first impression in a business meeting. Attendees can apply to have a meeting with industry professionals during the afternoon session.

A companion session to ARTISTS: MEET YOUR MARKETS
To help photographers gain experience speaking with gallerists, editors, curators, art buyers, book publishers, media companies and other professionals, LOOK3 is offering a practicum session as a companion to the June 16th morning class, Artists Meet Your Markets. Those accepted into the LOOK3 Pitch will have an opportunity to apply lessons learned in the morning class and put their new knowledge into practice, engaging in a “pitch” with photo professionals.

Nick Brandt has made a commitment to raise awareness about the fragility of wild animals and the destruction of the natural world. His newest work combines both messages in a compelling manner.

ARTIST TALK: OLIVIA BEE

Olivia Bee established her career through sharing her photographs of youth culture on social media. Bee’s work is largely focused on her own life and that of her friends.  Her first monograph, Olivia Bee: Kids in Love will be published by Aperture this spring. At age 22 she is the youngest artist to be on the LOOK3 stage.

ARTIST TALK: RUDDY ROYE

Radcliffe “Ruddy” Roye uses his camera as a tool that allows him to document the world around him as he sees it. The images he produces speak to the human condition, addressing the myriad instances of suffering and injustice that he is witness to that are often overlooked.

ARTIST TALK: MARY F. CALVERT

Mary F. Calvert is an independent photojournalist committed to using photography to affect meaningful social change and is known for producing work on under-reported and neglected gender based, human rights issues. She believes that journalists have a duty to shine a light into the deepest recesses of the human experience and provide a mirror for society to examine itself.

LEGACY ARTIST TALK: GRACIELA ITURBIDE

One of the premier artists of Latin America, Graciela Iturbide makes a rare public appearance at LOOK3. Join us for this special evening in her native Spanish language (translation to English provided.) Book signing to follow

ARTIST TALK: SHEILA PREE BRIGHT

In 2013 while photographing under-recognized living leaders of the Civil Rights movement, SHEILA PREE BRIGHT made a connection between young social activists taking a stand against the same struggles their parents and grandparent endured during the 1960’s. Her project 1960Now reflects on the similarities between then and now.

ARTIST TALK: BINH DANH

The images in Binh Danh’s project, Reflections in the National Parks are created as full-plate daguerrotypes, celebrating the Centennial of the Parks while honoring the history of medium of photography and the giants in our field whose images of the natural world helped establish public lands for all to enjoy.

ARTIST TALK: DOUG DUBOIS

Doug DuBois’ project, My Last Day At Seventeen captures the bravado and adventure of childhood with an eye towards its fragility and inevitable loss. Made over a five year period in the town of Cobh, County Cork in Ireland, the photographs are faithful depictions of adolescent experience, during the a time of economic uncertainty and the anxious countenance of Irish youth.

POP-UP BOOK FAIR

Yuri Kozyrev in conversation with MaryAnne Golon.
For the past 25 years, Russian born photojournalist Yuri Kozyrev has covered conflicts in the former Soviet Union and throughout the Middle East. His latest work centers on the challenges and tragedies of mass global migration.

FESTIVAL CLOSING LECTURE AND SCREENING

On assignment for National Geographic Magazine, photojournalist Ed Kashi and staff writer Don Belt visited Syria many times over the past two decades, reporting on subjects ranging from water scarcity and geopolitical conflict to Syria’s embattled Arab Christians. They will share their joint experiences and Ed’s images, along with a screening of co-producers Julie Winokur and Ed Kashi’s award winning film Syria’s Lost Generation (2014), a short documentary that provides an intensely personal account of two Syrian teenagers living unsettled lives as refugees.  Discussion to follow.
