CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 2017-18 season with concerts on Saturday, February 17, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, February 18, 3:30pm, at Monticello High School.

The orchestra will return to its regular Sunday venue, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School on March 25 and April 29.

Music Director Benjamin Rous conducts the program that includes Ricercar by Michigan-born composer Nathan Shields; Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major with trumpet soloist Rachel Duncan; and Johannes Brahms’ sunny and buoyant Symphony No. 2 in D Major.

Rachel Duncan is a Lecturer in Trumpet at the University of Virginia and Principal Trumpet with the Charlottesville Symphony.  She has performed as guest Principal Trumpet with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Peoria Symphony Orchestra and Dubuque Symphony Orchestra.  Devoted to chamber music as well, Duncan is a founding member of New Chicago Brass and has played with Seraph Brass, a brass quintet comprising America’s top female brass players.

The orchestra’s 2017-18 season is supported in part by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.  The November concerts are sponsored by the law firm of McGuireWoods.  Rachel Duncan’s appearance is underwritten by the Angus Macaulay Visiting Artists Fund.

For those who want to “Know the Score,” pre-concert lectures are presented 45 minutes prior to each Saturday night concert.  Free of charge, these popular lectures by UVA McIntire Department of Music Associate Professor Richard Will offer a lively and informative behind-the-scenes look at classical music.

In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday nights and at Monticello High School on Sunday afternoon. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Charlottesville Symphony and Music Director Benjamin Rous return to the stage on February 17th and 18th to perform Brahms’ Second Symphony, the most overtly optimistic of all of the Brahms symphonies. The orchestra and Principal Trumpet Rachel Duncan will also perform Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, perhaps the best-known and most-performed trumpet concerto, and Ricercar, a work by up-and-coming American composer Nathan Shields. On Saturday the 17th the concert begins at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. On Sunday, the 18th the concert starts at 3:30 at Monticello High School.
