Festival officials also announced the addition of the highly-acclaimed new film Mudbound to the 2017 program. Based on the novel by Hillary Jordan, and adapted into a screenplay by Dee Rees and Virgil Williams, Mudbound is set in racially divided post-World War II Mississippi, and tells the story of two men – one black and one white – who forge a friendship based on their shared war experiences. The film stars Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) and Grammy Award-winning artist and actor Mary J. Blige, and has been earning significant Oscar buzz since its premiere at Sundance. Mudbound will be presented on Sunday, November 12 at 8:30 PM at St. Anne’s-Belfield.
The VFF will also bring in Alex Gansa, the show runner of the hit Showtime series Homeland. Gansa will join a panel discussion following the screening on Sunday, November 12 at 6:00 PM with director Lesli Linka Glatter. Homeland is currently in production on its seventh season, which is being filmed in Richmond.
