On Friday, October 7 between 5pm and 7pm, Computers4Kids (C4K) will present “@tribute ” at City Space gallery on the downtown mall.  Members of the public can view collaborative self-portraits of 17 different C4K youth.  Each youth participant posed in front of backgrounds of their own design, featuring colors, symbols, and objects representing aspects of their own identity and how they want to be seen by the world.  Charlottesville-based photographer Eze Amos captured the final images to create large scale canvas portraits.

The @tribute artists participated in C4K’s recent 5-day artist- in-residency summer camp.  New York-based artists Matt and Liz Kleberg co-facilitated the camp and guided the young artists through their creative process. C4K youth members were inspired by a visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Kehinde Wiley “A New Republic” Exhibit. Wiley’s art was used as a starting point for examining what personal identity is and ways of representing oneself through creative use of layered symbols. The camp was made possible by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

@tribute is free to the public and will be open as part of Charlottesville’s First Fridays between 5pm -7pm on October 7, 2016.  City Space is located on the downtown mall at 100 5^th Street NE Charlottesville, VA 22902.   @tribute will also be on display at City Space until October 28, 2016 and can be viewed during City Space’s gallery hours: Monday-Friday between 9am – 5pm.

Computers4Kids (C4K) is a year-round out-of-school time learning studio that empowers low-income middle and high school youth through daily hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities.  C4K provides regular one-on-one and group mentoring opportunities to build skills and spark new interests for college and career success.  C4K is a member of The Clubhouse Network, a community of over 100 clubhouses worldwide, headquartered at the Museum of Science, Boston, and started over 20 years ago in collaboration with the MIT Media
