CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 2015-16 season on Saturday, February 20, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on UVA Grounds, and Sunday, February 21, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the Eastern European program opens with Anatoly Lyadov’s Polonaise.  Other works include Sergei Prokofiev’s thrilling Piano Concerto No. 3 and Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, sometimes referred to as his “Pastoral” symphony.

Russian pianist Gleb Ivanov is the soloist at both concerts.  Following a performance at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Washington Post wrote, “Eerily like the ghost of Horowitz, Mr. Ivanov engulfed the keyboard, rattling the rafters and thrilling the audience.  His talent is larger than life.”

At a young age in Russia, Ivanov was a protégé of Mstislav Rostropovich, appearing as soloist under the famous maestro with the Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic.  He also performed with the Moscow State Orchestra, with the Kremlin Orchestra, and at the Pushkin, Glinka and Scriabin Museums in Moscow.  Mr. Ivanov won First Prizes at the 1994 and 1996 International “Classical Legacy” Competition, and the prize for Best Performance of a Beethoven Sonata at the First Vladimir Horowitz Competition in Kiev.

Months after arriving in the United States from Russia, he won First Prize at the 2005 Young Concerts Artists International Auditions.   He appears in Charlottesville as part of the Young Concert Artists Orchestra Partners Project.

The orchestra’s 2015-16 season, which celebrates Kate Tamarkin’s 10th anniversary as Music Director is made possible in part by major gifts from Frances Massey Dulaney and the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

For those who want to “Know the Score,” a pre-concert lecture will be presented 45 minutes prior to the Saturday night concert at nearby Minor Hall.  Free of charge, this popular lecture by UVA Associate Professor of Music Richard Will, offers a lively and informative behind-the-scenes look at the program.

In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School on Sunday afternoons.  The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
