Help us transform a city bus and transit shelters throughout Charlottesville. Tom Tom & Charlottesville Area Transit are partnering to commission original works of art for the 2017 City Art Bus and the 2017 Bus Shelter Art Competition.

Art Bus Competition

Tom Tom Founders Festival and Charlottesville Area Transit are looking for artists and designers to create a whimsical and energetic design for the next City Art Bus. The annual City Art Bus serves as a moving mural and operates on bus lines throughout Charlottesville and Ablemarle County. The winning design will wrap around the entire exterior of the bus and will be seen by 200,000+ people.

Competition Details

    • To enter, fill out this form.
    • Included in the submission form is a blank template for the Art Bus. Please provide a concept sketch using this template
    • Please also provide a link to your artist website or online portfolio.
    • When submitting your initial sketch, please include your last name and the title of the piece when naming the file.
    • Semifinalists will be chosen in mid-October and will be asked to submit a final design through Adobe Illustrator by mid-November.
    • The selected artist/designer will be earn a $500 commission to create a digitally printed vinyl wrap that will cover all sides of the bus.
    • Deadline October 7.

Bus Shelter Art Competition

Show off your artwork this Spring. Come April, sixteen bus shelters throughout Charlottesville will be turned into unexpected art galleries. Submissions of original artwork will be featured prominently in CAT bus shelters and on limited edition posters throughout the city.

Competition Details

  • To enter, complete this form.
  • Submissions must be finalized pieces and may include existing work.
  • Each piece should be square in format and should be able to scale up to 28″ x 28″.
  • When uploading your submission file (10MB max), please make sure the file name includes your last name and the title of the piece.
  • Artists may submit up to three pieces and will need to complete a form for each.
  • Sixteen finalists will be chosen by a local selection committee. Each finalists will receive $100.
  • The finalists will also be put up to a crowd vote with the winner receiving an additional $500.
  • Deadline December 1.
