The United States Institute of Theatre Technology’s 2016 Stage Expo attracted 4,500 attendees this year. Among those numbers were students and industry professionals. On the expo floor, there were 274 exhibitors either promoting, recruiting, or training. Over 50 of those exhibitors were other universities.
The University of Virginia set up a 10ft x 10ft booth showcasing UVA’s Drama Department and the Heritage Theatre Festival. Many universities only had small table displays, however, there were a couple that had larger 20ft x 20ft booths. During the three days the show floor was open, we spoke directly with about 300 people. Four graduate students, a Heritage alum, and myself represented UVA. Many students were interested in the Heritage Theatre Festival and the Festival of Moving Creatures.
The conference offered a few new events this year, in addition to the annual showcases and presentations. One of those events, “ESET Quiz Bowl”, was designed to bring attention to the ESET (Essential Skills for Entertainment Technicians) certifications. This was a jeopardy style competition in which participants from all over the country competed. One of our graduate students, Steven Spera, participated in the Lighting category. There was also the opportunity for our students to have their portfolios and resumes critiqued by industry professionals. This gives our graduates a leg up after graduation when looking to secure a job from some of these top entertainment companies.
At USITT in 2015, I was asked to speak on a panel for 2016’s Conference. This panel would be about stage automation, specifically robotic wagons and automated ways to move scenery. This panel, which was sponsored by Creative Conners, consisted of speakers from Purdue, Carnegie Mellon, Virginia Tech, and UMKC. Each school brought their project to present and show off.
Both Purdue and UMKC had robotic platforms similar to the one UVA students are working to develop. Out of the three robots there, the UVA robot was the only one that could functionally drive around as intended. I have been in contact with Rich Dionne from Purdue, and we are planning to collaborate on our two projects. The USITT Conference offers something for everyone. Thanks to the support from the Provost of the Arts and the David Weiss student enrichment fund, the Drama Department was able to participate in this year’s USITT Conference. Next year, USITT will be held in St. Louis, Missouri with new events, panels, showcases, and opportunities.
