Last week Wednesday, March 7th and again, a piece choreographed by UVA alumna Erika Choe on two undergraduate dance minors, Vivien Fergusson and Gabrielle Struckell, was one of twelve pieces out of 40 student, faculty, and guest artist works selected by professional adjudicators to be included in the final Gala Concert at the Mid-Atlantic South Regional American College Dance Conference held at VCU. Adjudicators praised Choe for her “striking and innovative” movement vocabulary and compositional structure and the student performers for demonstrating a deep level of embodiment and their “strong, exceptional performance” of the piece.

The dance program faculty are proud of our alumna’s development as a choreographer and our current students’ strong performance at this regional conference and congratulate them on the hours of work that went into creating and rehearsing this piece for adjudication.

Erika Choe, a New York based movement artist who is graduated in 2015, completed her undergraduate degree through the Interdisciplinary Program with a focus on Dance, Psychology, and Arts Administration. Her piece and again carries notes of interdependency, empowering rigor, and unveiled recuperation. It aims to explore the performance of grind and subsequent restoration through contrasting movements of grit with that of tenderness. “Coming back to UVA to create on the dancers has been an incredible reminder of how nurturing and stimulating the dance program is and has impacted my dance career,” Choe said.
