Tune into WTJU’s sister station, WXTJ 100.1 FM – WXTJ.fm – to hear shows this weekend (Aug. 3-5) created by 36 students in grades 3 through 8 who attended WTJU’s 2018 summer camps for aspiring media creators.

“Our studios have been filled with high-energy young people who produced radio shows ranging from interviews and storytelling to music sets that they curated as DJs,” said Nathan Moore, WTJU general manager.

For three weeks in a row in July, WTJU staffers guided kids through listening and sound, music discovery, studio tools, and recording and editing. There was a field trip to The Jefferson Theater and Sidetracks downtown, plus a mystery game using radio clues.

In this fifth year of WTJU’s broadcasting camps for kids, there were three sessions, each lasting five days, with a cap of 12 students per session to ensure a hands-on experience.

“What WTJU is really good at is music discovery and bringing people together through shared music experiences,” said Moore. “It only makes sense that we would extend that mission to include kids in the Charlottesville area. WTJU’s summer camps empower kids to find their voice, tap into the local music scene, and get creative on-air.”
