CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 44th season with concerts on Saturday, February 16, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, February 17, 3:30pm, at Monticello High School. This represents a venue change from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center where the orchestra usually performs on Sunday afternoons.

Music Director and Conductor Benjamin Rous serves up an international banquet, including Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante defúnte (Pavane for a Dead Princess); Ravel’s brilliant Piano Concerto in G Major; Zoltán Kodály’s Variations on a Hungarian Folksong “The Peacock”; and Siempre Lunes, Siempre Marzo (translated as “Always Monday, Always March”) by Venezuelan American composer Reinaldo Moya.

Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess is not a tribute to any particular princess, but, rather, evokes a slow processional dance that, in the composer’s words “a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court.”

Siempre Lunes, Siempre Marzo is based on Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and refers to Melquíades the Gypsy’s room where time passes in an unusual way: it is always Monday, and always March.

Zoltán Kodály’s Variations on a Hungarian Folksong are based on a melody dating back over 1,500 years and heard in a popular Hungarian folksong titled “Fly, Peacock, Fly.”

Although Maurice Ravel was a Frenchman, his Piano Concert in G Major was heavily influenced by American jazz to which he was introduced during a concert tour of the United States in 1928. The soloist in the concerto is Andrew Le. Hailed as “an impressive tour-de-force” by New York Concert Review, Drew Le was the first-prize winner of the 2004 Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and currently serves as Associate Professor of Piano and Head of the Keyboard Area at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He is also a Co-Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck.

The orchestra’s 2018-19 season is supported in part by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation. Andrew Le’s appearance is underwritten by the Angus Macaulay Visiting Artists Fund. The Saturday night performance is sponsored by the law firm of McGuireWoods.

For those who want to “Know the Score,” pre-concert lectures are presented 45 minutes prior to each Saturday night concert at nearby Minor Hall. Free of charge, these popular lectures by UVA McIntire Department of Music Associate Professor Richard Will offer a lively and informative behind-the-scenes look at each concert’s works. In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday night and at Monticello High School on Sunday afternoon. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
Single tickets are $10-$45 for adults and $10 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket in advance. Single tickets may be purchased at the University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm, Monday through Friday in the lobby of the Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.

All University of Virginia employees (faculty and staff of all UVA departments and professional schools) are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to individual performances. This offer does not apply to subscriptions, the December Family Holiday concerts, Pops at the Paramount or previously purchased tickets.
