When the COVID-19 health crisis hit the United States in early March, we had no idea that we’d still be working from home in late May, navigating the upending changes to life as we know it – changes that, too, have affected our work in the arts at UVA. You will be receiving this magazine to your inbox in three installments over the summer. In this edition, we look back at the past year and explore when the UVA Department of Drama partnered with Children’s Assistive Technology Service to create costumes for children with limited mobility that incorporate wheelchairs into their design, aptly named Hallowheels. You can also read about Veronica Merrill, a rockstar Miller Arts Scholar, a University-wide effort to showcase poetry and art on UTS buses, and much more.

Building Bridges. If you think about it, this is one of the things that the arts do best, and the idea of building bridges is at the heart of a university-wide initiative championed by UVA President Jim Ryan from the first day he returned to Grounds. In this issue, we take a look at how people and departments throughout the Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds are reaching across disciplines and across communities to find ways for people to experience their work and the ways in which the work is helping people process the world around them in new and enlightening ways. We will also celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Mortimer Caplin, who recently passed away at the age of 103. Mr. Caplin often spoke of how his passion for the arts was born right here at UVA, where he performed in a number of drama productions as an undergrad. He carried that passion, and his love for the University, for a lifetime, and he clearly passed it on to his wonderful family.

In this volume, you’ll meet Federico Cuatlacuatl, an Assistant Professor in our Studio Art department, who is working across the border to bring a new understanding to issues of immigration. You’ll find another highly topical and vital story about manifestA, an organization founded by two graduate students at the UVA School of Architecture to address longstanding financial disparity and inequity in the industry they are about to enter. Another highlight of the spring semester was a visit from Broadway superstar Leslie Odom, Jr., who was our 2019 President’s Speaker for the Arts.
